Basketball Geelong gets $7 Million

“Give Geelong its fair share!” exclaimed Darryn Lyons today regarding Supercats Stadium.

Basketball Geelong has been attempting to secure funding to convert the timber warehouse into six basketball courts.

“Basketball Geelong been talking to Andrew Katos, Member for South Barwon, who’s been very supportive. The problem has come with John Eren, the Lara sitting member and State Minister for Sport. At every step, it’s been delayed and put off – it’s as if they simply want to wear them down to the point where they just go away”, said Lyons.

Environment

Beyond banning straws and take away coffee cups we need to be looking at removing plastic all together and working together towards always using sustainable options in our every day lives.

I think the most important thing is that we begin! If we all start taking small steps towards helping our environment we can make great change together!

Crime

Crime in Geelong has been spiralling out of control, I don’t understand why it takes an election for politicians to start paying attention and allocating resources to tackle these issues.

Geelong needs a Community Policing Task Force, which is about going back to basics, having more police and especially more PSO’s out on the street doing foot and bike patrols and building relationships with our community.

Payroll Tax

Victorian businesses begin to pay payroll tax at $650k compared to Queensland where the threshold is $1.1million. This is ridiculous, we need to encourage and foster businesses not tax them for paying their employees! Yes Geelong only pays the regional rate but we shouldn’t be taxing jobs at all!

Planes, Trains and Cruise Ships

My vision and priority for Geelong is to have cruise ships, a conference centre and 21stcentury transport links. This is a golden opportunity to give Corio Bay Foreshore a radical makeover now that the funding for the Waterfront Safe Harbour Precinct Redevelopment has been green lit.

Why I am running as an Independent

briefly signed up as a member of the Liberal party when I came back to Australia after living in London for years. I had been disillusioned with Australian politics for a long time including toing and froing of leaders in the Gillard and Rudd Governments.

Australia looked like an absolute joke, looking on from London I was fed up with the constant changes in leadership and the mockery that was Australian politics. So when I moved home I joined the Liberal Party, in the hope for a more stable government.

Lyons Will Stand

Former Geelong Mayor Darryn Lyons today announced his nomination for the State seat of Geelong, vowing to give the city a tenacious voice in Parliament.

The Geelong businessman will stand as an Independent in a bid to wrest the seat from Labour, which has a 6 per cent margin.

“I will be giving voters, appalled by the childish behaviour, theatrics and vitriol of the major parties, a viable alternative,” he said at a campaign launch on the Geelong waterfront.
